Fresh coffee: what is it all about?

Drinking a cup of coffee each morning became an automatism? To wake up your taste buds, turn over to fresh coffee. What's that, you ask? Fresh coffee. Here's what it's about.

Choosing a coffee bag on the shelves of a grocery store doesn't ensure the beans' freshness. How could you know whether your coffee is fresh? This very prized characteristic is determined through a few details.

Roasting date

Upon buying, take note of the roasting date of the coffee. If that information is not present on the bag, that's aalready a bad start. Every respectable roaster should inddicate on every bag when their beans had been roasted. This indication says more than you would think. Coffee beans should be grinded at least 24 hours after their roasting. Their taste reaches its summum about two to three weeks after being roasted. Why wait thiss much? Once roasted, coffee beans need a certain rest to liberate all of their flavor. During that time, coffee releases its natural oils, the carbon diokyde excess slowly dissipates... in short, chemistry operates. The fine taste of fresh coffee shines through that process. Flavors of caramel and chocolate, fruits and citrus, or others depending on the kind, stand out further in every cup, in each sip. This phenomenon is true for filter coffees, espressos and french press coffess as well.

The beans' freshness takes a role as early as the roasting. The sugar forms and coffee evaporates its humidity as soon as the beans are burnt. At this precise moment, coffee explodes to develop its flavor. Afterwards, time is very precious. Flavor losss comes into play as soon as the beans leave the roaster.

Fresh coffee and espresso

An espresso prepared with fresh coffee is stunning. At first glance, the espresso presents a generous cream. the foam's color differs slightly as well. Once you taste it, you can clearly see the flavor is enhanced. For espressos concocted through staler beans, the beauty of this art piece will be quite lesser. This coffee is denoted by its thinner cream and its paler hue.

Grinding

How would you preserve the coffee freshness to its maximum? First, it is essential to buy it in whole beans. This is the very reason here at Mountain Ranch Coffee, we do not sell our coffee grinded. Grinding coffee is to divide the bean in hundreds of particles and thusly create an instant loss of its freshness. As such it is very important to grind your coffee solely before you infuse it. For a good espresso, it is essential to have a coffee grinder providing a uniform grinding. Favor bags equipped with a valve as well. Here at Mountain Ranch Coffee, we prefer these bags, as they allow the excess gas that gets formed after roasting to leave.

Green coffee

For even more flavor, you can roast the beans yourself. See our selection of green coffees and the roasting suggestions for every variety.
